Green buildings and sustainable products are coming alive more than ever. We look at a design-led social transition toward a more sustainable future achieved by transition design. As Joanna Boehnert explains (2018): "The change that Transition Design seeks is brought about through the acknowledgment that fundamental change is often the result of a shift in mindset or worldview that leads to different ways of interacting with others." It is a social change, how we interact with each other and most importantly how we pass on the vision of sustainability. The potential environmental, social, political and economic benefits are profound. They can reduce transportation distances and emissions, create more sustainable nutrient flows through the use of locally available materials, give people new jobs, develop stronger communities and save money to stay in local economies for longer. Designers play a big role in the supply chain. Even the smallest project is connected by flows of energy and social and financial capital to the ecosystem. If each project would give back more than it takes from the ecosystem, the passive house would not be an option. Designers are tools for sustainability, actions and solutions towards it. …
