The opening sentence of "Pride and Prejudice" puts the reader in good mood: «It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife." It sets the tone as generally humorous as it remains unaltered until the last page. All of Jane Austen's novels are entertaining: she was talented for narration to such an extent that she could allow herself to have nothing very much happening in her books and still keep her readers interested from the beginning to the end.
