In 1985 he graduated from the Faculty of Culture and Arts of the Latvian Conservatoire.
In 2008 he received a Master's degree in theater directing from the Latvian Academy of Culture.

In the 1980s he worked in the folk dance ensemble "Gundega", initially as a reporter and later as artistic director.
