If your reputation was not up to par as far as social classes went then any pull one may have possibly had was lost. Shame would have been brought upon Giovanni's family had he lost the trial.
The upper class will always continue to have the power mainly because of human nature. Greed is part of a human's natural inclination and when one finds a way to prosper or benefit from a certain situation, sometimes it doesn't matter how illegal or just the case, that person would do whatever it takes to come out on top with the benefits. Corruption was popular as well as the norm for the judicial system and its courts; power was the ruling decision, just or unjust.
