1. The first song lyrics provides us with a continuous metaphor, which is extended throughout the song and creates a vivid and expressive impression. This extended metaphor arouses a kind of visual phantasmagoria by creating a fancy dream-scape.
Pie in the sky means “promise of heaven in some vague future while suffering today”. This metaphor has an interesting origin: it comes from the song “The Preacher and the Slave”. In this song the singer complains about the philosophy of the Salvation Army: “You will eat, by and by, in the glorious land way up high in the sky. Work and pray, live on hay, you'll get pie in the sky when you die, that's a lie!…
