Ecuador was part of the Incan empire at the time of the Spanish conquest in the 1530s. The Last Inca king was Atahualpa. Atahualpa was then conquered by the Spaniards and Ecuador was then ruled by the Spanish.
Directly after the liberation of 1822 Ecuador was a province of the new republic of Gran Columbia, of which Simon Bolivar was president. After this republic fell Ecuador became an independent republic. During most of the 19th century, it was dominated by many different dictators. …
