William Somerset Maugham’s short story “The Unconquered” narrates about a French girl, Annette, and a German soldier, Hans, in time of First World War. Going through the story, the author shows us Annette’s multifaceted nature. In the beginning of the story Annette was sore and hostile, what is entirely understandable. Later, meanwhile Annette had to express motherly calm and start to sense mother instinct; she tried to get rid off baby, which is contrary to human nature. And the later, her patriotism grew into the cruelty. …
