One of the most important political issues covered by The Baltic Times is the article about embattled Ventspils Mayor Aivars Lembergs who has announced that he would go on a hunger strike to protest alleged violations of his constitutional rights. Aivars Lembergs is suspected of large-scale bribery, tax evasion and fraud. His domestic assets have been places under arrest. Also his foreign assets, including those under his children`s names, have been put under arrest. He maintains his innocence, claiming that the charges are politically motivated.
Lithuania`s Social Liberal Party announced that it will join the nation`s ruling political coalition. The decision was a surprise to many observers as it came after several days of wavering and strong statements that the party would stay in the opposition camp.…
