Literature plays a key role in global culture. It educates, entertains and helps to understand our deepest dreams and feelings. A book is one of the greatest wonders in the world. (There is nothing more wonderful than books.)
It gives a unique chance to know something new. Thanks to books we can talk to people who lived in different centuries. The book is a faithful and undemanding friend: it can be put aside and taken up again at any moment. Nobody knows when the fiction began. At first story telling was an oral activity. Myths and tales were past and memorized by generations. The earliest surviving examples are the epic poems of Homer. For a long time people used papyrus and skins of animals, then the Chinese invented paper.
