Television was introduced into Australia just in time for the Melbourne Olympic Games. The first broadcast was in September 1956. The early TV sets costed a fortune for the average household so you would often see crowds of people looking through the shop windows at the black and white TV screens. In the first year of its arrival only 10 000 were sold but during the next three years 600 000 sets were sold.
