In response to this claim Howard said "It is my duty to hunt down any sinful animal and tell him where he belongs."
<Tab/>Chief Joseph inherited his position in his tribe from his father when he died. Joseph continued his family's brutal dictatorship over his tribe and all of the people around him. Going nearly mad he tore up the sacred bible one afternoon in a fit of rage. "It is clear that from this moment on he and the people that followed him were the direct hand of the devil," Said the contemporary Philippe Gertrud.
<Tab/>Chief Joseph was a major figure head for the Indian resistance, and his capture is a major psychological blow to the enemy. The BIA is expecting the opposition to the settlement of Wallowa Valley to crumble and be destroyed with the surrender of Chief Joseph. With the death and destruction assumed to be over many new settlers have been pouring into the area. It is not known at this time if the United States government will prosecute Joseph for the many crimes that he has committed over his lifetime.
<Tab/>Seth Thomas served in the United States Army for several years before retiring to write articles and editorials for several local papers.
